Jane Addams Biography: Age, Height, Birthday, Family, Net Worth

Due to her mother's untimely demise, Jane Addams grew up in a large family with many siblings, but without a mother figure. She did, however, establish a strong bond with her father, who would become an important figure in her personal development.

Jane Addams Biography: Laura Jane Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois, on September 6, 1860, to an English-American family with seven other children. When Addams was only two years old, her mother passed away, leaving her in the care of her older siblings. In the supervision of her sisters, Addams spent her childhood reading and playing until she was diagnosed with tuberculosis of the spine. The illness altered her existence because it prevented her from acting as a typical child. Instead of creating peers, Addams focused on her father, developing a close relationship with him.

Jane Addams Birthday

Due to her mother’s untimely demise, Jane Addams grew up in a large family with many siblings, but without a mother figure. She did, however, establish a strong bond with her father, who would become an important figure in her personal development. Her father served as Illinois State Senator from 1855 to 1870. He was a friend of president Abraham Lincoln. Addams grew up surrounded by politicians, which fueled her desire to effect meaningful change in the world.

She also enjoyed reading and soon encountered authors like Charles Dickens who wrote about the plight of the impoverished. Such literature instilled in Addams a sense of empathy, prompting her to decide to become a physician so she could treat the afflictions and diseases of the poor.

Addams attended the Rockford Female Seminary and graduated in 1881 with a college diploma. Her education was ultimately interrupted by her deteriorating health and her father’s untimely death. Addams had no idea that fortune had something wonderful in store for her. At the age of 27, she travelled to Europe and discovered a settlement home. This inspired her to establish her own settlement house in Chicago, a fantasy that came true in 1889. The purpose of the settlement house was to serve the destitute and provide them with the necessities necessary to live a life of dignity. This charitable endeavour established Addams as a symbol of altruism and dedication to the disadvantaged.
