He is the son of Victoria Elizabeth and Kent Bateman. His father, an actor, writer, director, and the creator of a Hollywood repertory stage, inspired him to pursue acting, as did his older sister.

When Bateman was a young actor, he enjoyed great success. At the age of eleven, he made his television debut in a cereal commercial. In 1980, he was cast in a recurrent role on “Little House on the Prairie,” a position that lasted until 1982. He played Derek Taylor in the 1982 film “Silver Spoons,” which ran until 1984. That year, he was cast in the lead in his own sitcom, “It’s Your Move,” on N.B.C. due to his increasing popularity. He was cast in a recurring role on “The Hogan Family” in 1985. At the age of eighteen, he was permitted to helm three episodes of the show, making him the youngest director in American history.

Career

After turning his attention to the cinema, Bateman landed his first job as Todd Howard in “Teen Wolf Too” in 1987. In the same year, he starred in the television supernatural horror movie “Bates Motel” and the spin-off “Psycho.” He also starred in the films “The Sweetest Thing” (2002) and “This Can’t Be Love” (1994) during this period. During this time, he continued to appear in several television shows, such as “Some of My Best Friends” (2001) and “Chicago Sons” (1997). Bateman was chosen to play Michael Bluth, the main character, in the television sitcom “Arrested Development” in 2003.

Bateman received numerous nominations and accolades for the series, including a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy, despite its never-high viewership. He was cast in movies like the buddy police action comedy “Starsky & Hutch” and the sports comedy “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” in 2004 while he was on this show. 2013 saw him reprise his “Arrested Development” character Michael Bluth and make his feature film directing debut in the dark comedy “Bad Words.” He provided the voice of Nick Wilde in the Disney film “Zootopia” in 2016. He started directing and acting in the Netflix criminal thriller “Ozark” in 2017. For the show, he won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Dramatic Series. He returned to hosting “Saturday Night Live” in 2020. Bateman married actress Amanda Anka, who is the daughter of well-known singer Paul Anka, on July 3, 2001. They and their two daughters live in Los Angeles, California.
