Joshua Scott Chasez, also known by his stage name ‘J.C.’ Chasez, is a multitalented sensation. He performs as a singer, songwriter, producer, performer, and actor on occasion. You may have seen him on “The Mickey Mouse Club” as a juvenile or in the popular boy band NSYNC as a young adult.
Born in Bowie, Maryland, on August 8, 1976, he was reared by Roy and Karen Chasez, the former foster parents of his mother. Karen was an editor, whereas Ron worked as a consultant for a technology company. They reared JC’s biological mother and adopted him at the age of five.
Chasez was timid as a child and would only dance in front of his parents at home. Eventually, he added singing to his list of talents to help him overcome his lack of confidence. Things changed when he reached his adolescent years. At the age of thirteen, JC entered a national talent competition as a performer, and he won! This entirely altered the young boy’s outlook, as he realised he had a talent for performing and enjoyed singing.
Two years later, his mother saw a casting call for Disney’s “The Mickey Mouse Club” in the “Washington Post” and believed JC would be a good fit for the role. He auditioned with the Richard Marx song “Right Here Waiting” and was cast as a performer in the fourth season. The series ended in 1994, and during his tenure as a Mouseketeer, he became friends with Justin Timberlake, who would later become his bandmate.
Chris Kirkpatrick formed the boy band NSYNC the following year and appointed JC and Justin its lead singers. Their debut album, “NSYNC,” was released in 1998, selling more than 11 million copies worldwide and garnering immense popularity in the United States. Two years later, they released “No Strings Attached,” which held the record for the fastest-selling album of all time until 2015, with 2.4 million copies sold in the first week. The band decided to take a break following the release of their third studio album in 2001 and their “Celebrity Tour” in 2002.
JC wrote and produced songs for the band and other artists, such as Wild Orchid, while he was a member of the band, and he continued to do so during their sabbatical. His first solo single, “Blowin’ Me Up (With Her Love),” was released in 2002, followed by his debut solo album, “Schizophrenic,” in 2004. In the same year, he began working on his second album for Jive Records, titled “The Story of Kate,” which was to feature Timberlake, Timbaland, Dallas Austin, and Jimmy Harry. The album was never released due to label issues, and JC and Jive Records parted ways in 2007.
After that, Chasez continued his work as a songwriter, contributing to albums by artists such as David Archuleta, Matthew Morrison, and Backstreet Boys. He served as a juror for MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” from 2008 until the show’s cancellation in 2012. In the same year, he co-founded the all-girl band ‘Girl Radical’ with Jimmy Harry, and in 2016, he portrayed a fictionalised version of himself in “Opening Night,” his first significant film appearance.
