Jefferson Davis Birthday

Jefferson Finis Davis was a renowned American politician who will forever be remembered in the annals of history. The youngest of 10 children, he was born on June 3, 1808, in Fairview, Kentucky, to a moderately prosperous farmer. Davis was a Gemini and a descendant of the English. His family relocated from Louisiana to Wilkinson County, Mississippi, and he attended Wilkinson Academy.
Davis’s father perished when he was 16 years old, and his older brother Joseph arranged for him to attend the United States Military Academy. In 1824, he enrolled at the academy and graduated in 1828. He was stationed at Fort Crawford in Prairie du Chien, Michigan Territory. In March 1832, he returned to Mississippi on furlough. During the Mexican-American War of 1846, Davis served as a colonel for his first father-in-law, General Zachary Taylor. He participated in the September 1846 Battle of Monterrey and the 1847 Battle of Buena Vista, during which he was wounded in the foot.

Davis was appointed a U.S. senator as a result of his service accomplishment. He assumed this position as a Democrat in December 1847. In December 1849, the Senate appointed Davis to the Committee on Military Affairs. Senator Davis was elected by the Mississippi legislature to a six-year term. A few months later, he resigned from this position in order to run for governor of Mississippi. Davis was defeated by a margin of 999 ballots and resumed his political career without a position. After Franklin Pierce was elected president in 1853, he appointed Davis to the position of ‘Secretary of War.’ Davis facilitated the “Gadsden Purchase” of southern Arizona from Mexico while in this position. In addition to other effective directives, Davis bolstered army morale by instituting the widespread use of the weapons he employed during the Mexican-American War.

Davis was inaugurated as provisional President of the Confederate States in February 1861, following his resignation from the U.S. Senate. General P.G.T. Beauregard was given the authority to command all Confederate forces in Charleston, South Carolina. Davis was a wonderful politician, but he had several flaws, including a reluctance to delegate responsibility, favouritism towards friends, and an inability to work with those who disagreed with him. Davis was married twice, the first time to Sarah Knox Taylor, who died of malaria a few months into their marriage in 1835, and the second time to Varina Banks Howell, who bore him six children, only two of whom survived.
