Jackson was adopted the year following his birth by Charles Henry Jackson, whom his mother wed. He was the class president of Sterling High School, which was segregated at the time. After earning his diploma in 1959, he attended the University of Illinois, which was predominately Caucasian, on a football scholarship. He transferred to North Carolina A&T after two semesters, where he participated in local civil rights demonstrations against segregated theaters, libraries, and restaurants while playing quarterback. A member of the Greenville Eight during this time, he was apprehended for utilizing a white library. Jackson obtained a Bachelor of Science in sociology in 1964 and subsequently registered at Chicago Theological Seminary. He ceased attending in 1966.

Dr. Martin Luther King, with whom Jackson collaborated, appointed him to a position with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Dr. King appointed Jackson to head the Chicago division of Operation Breadbasket, the economic arm of the S.C.L.C., in 1966. Additionally, the Church ordained Jackson as a minister in 1968. Following the demise of Dr. King and his subsequent repercussions with the S.C.L.C., Jackson established Operation PUSH (People United To Serve Humanity) in 1971. With the intention of exerting pressure on politicians to enhance economic prospects for blacks and individuals of other ethnicities, Jackson formulated Operation PUSH. To compete for the presidency, he resigned as president of Operation PUSH in 1984 and founded the Rainbow Coalition. Beyond being an American politician, Jackson was more. Through consistently advocating for the liberation of American citizens stranded in foreign countries ravaged by conflict, he consolidated his standing as an activist on a global scale. Jackson re-nominated himself for the presidency on the Democratic platform in 1988. He was elected as a shadow senator for the District of Columbia in 1997, a position he won in 1991.

During his later political years, Jackson provided support to the Obama administration and his son’s political aspirations. Given his political stature, Jackson’s private matters were widely known to the public. In December 1962, he wed Jacqueline Brown; the couple is the parent of five children. Jackson has a total of six offspring. His existence is shared with friends and family.
