Joe DiMaggio Biography: Joseph Paul DiMaggio, better known as Joe DiMaggio, was born in Martinez, California, on November 25, 1914. He was one of the most recognizable figures in baseball history, and even the youth of today recognize his name. From Sicily, Giuseppe and Rosalia, his parents, were immigrants. At a young age, DiMaggio’s family relocated to San Francisco. Having begun playing baseball at the tender age of ten, he discontinued his formal education upon the completion of junior high school. 1931 marked the beginning of DiMaggio’s semi-professional baseball career.

The following year, the athlete debuted professionally in baseball with the San Francisco Seals. The New York Yankees acquired his contract in 1934; however, he continued to play for the San Francisco Seals for an additional year prior to his transfer to the New York Yankees. During his time with the Seals, he was recognized as the most valuable player (MVP) in the minor leagues. In 1936, he debuted in the major leagues for the New York Yankees, and the following year, he was named the organization’s third most valuable player.

His $100,000 contract with the New York Yankees in 1949 made him the highest-earning player. In 1951, DiMaggio ended his professional baseball career at the age of 37 due to a succession of maladies that plagued him.

Regarding his declaration of retirement, DiMaggio stated, “I have come to an age where I am unable to generate any further output…”As baseball ceases to be enjoyable, it ceases to be a game; therefore, I have completed my final game.” He was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame four years later. He was recognized as the greatest surviving baseball player in 1969. Following an amicable union with Marilyn Monroe, he passed away on March 8, 1999, this time succumbing to lung cancer.
