His $100,000 contract with the New York Yankees in 1949 made him the highest-earning player. In 1951, DiMaggio ended his professional baseball career at the age of 37 due to a succession of maladies that plagued him.
Regarding his declaration of retirement, DiMaggio stated, “I have come to an age where I am unable to generate any further output…”As baseball ceases to be enjoyable, it ceases to be a game; therefore, I have completed my final game.” He was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame four years later. He was recognized as the greatest surviving baseball player in 1969. Following an amicable union with Marilyn Monroe, he passed away on March 8, 1999, this time succumbing to lung cancer.
