After completing elementary and secondary school at River Valley Charter School, he transferred to Newburyport High School. Keery attended Theatre in the Open, a performing arts vacation at Maudslay State Park, when he was younger. In the end, he began his acting career in high school and graduated from the Theatre School at DePaul University in 2014.
After graduating from DePaul University, Keery attended over a hundred auditions before landing the part of Steve Harrington on “Stranger Things.” Over the years, Keery has appeared in many films and television series. He appeared in “Empire” (2015), “Chicago Fire” (2012), and “Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party” (2015).
Late in 2015, Keery was hired as Steve in the Netflix series “Stranger Things.” Initially, he auditioned for the part of Jonathan, but later he submitted a video audition for his character. He was reintroduced in the second season, which premiered on October 27, 2017, just before Halloween.
Keery is also a musician; he was one of the lead guitarists for the garage and psych-rock band Post Animal, based in Chicago. In April of 2018, Keery contributed vocals and instruments to the sophomore album “When I Think Of You In A Castle.” Keery is no longer a member of the band, but he produces his own music under the alias ‘Djo’ in 2019.
