By 1695, both of Bach’s parents had passed away, and he was cared for by his older brother, Johann Christoph. Johann Christoph, an organist in Ohrdruf, provided Bach with his initial formal keyboard instruction. Bach attended the prestigious Michaelskirche Grammar School in Lüneburg, where he learned to play the organ. At the age of 18, he was appointed organist at Neue Kirche’ in Arnstadt in 1703.

In June 1707, he became the organist at St Blasius in Mühlhausen. There, he fell in love with his cousin Maria Barbara and married her. Bach moved on to become the court organist in the private orchestra of the Duke of Saxe-Weimar.

In 1717, he moved to Kothen, where he worked as music director for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Kothen and became good friends with the prince. In 1720, Maria, Bach’s wife, died suddenly, leaving him with four children. A year later, he married Anna Magdalena, and he produced most of his work, including the six Brandenburg Concertos, during this period. (BWV 1046–51). Bach ultimately settled in Leipzig in May 1723 as the Kantor of the Thomas School, where he remained until his death in July 1750, before he could complete ‘The Art of the Fugue.’ Fifty years after Bach’s death, his music was deemed obsolete. Around 1900, his musical genius was acknowledged, and his works were published, making them accessible for study. Bach’s monumental impact on the Baroque period is widely acknowledged today.

Bach had over twenty offspring between his two marriages. Six males and four girls were the only ones to make it to adulthood.

Bach desired to leave Duke Weimar’s court orchestra to work for Prince Leopold, which so enraged the Duke that Bach was detained and imprisoned for several weeks in 1716.

Bach served as Prince Leopold’s music director, and the two became such close acquaintances that Bach named Prince Leopold the godfather of one of his children.

Bach’s eyesight began to deteriorate, and he underwent eye surgery; however, he developed multiple postoperative infections and ultimately went blind.
