Early Life
Born in Roswell, New Mexico on December 31, 1943, Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., also known as John Denver, was the son of Henry Denver Deutschendorf Senior and Emma Louise Swope. He was raised in the vicinity and his father served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force at the Roswell Air Force Base. Denver has always loved music, and his grandmother gave him his first instrument when he was just two years old.
Despite his passion for singing and music, he studied architecture at Texas Tech University. He quickly came to the conclusion that this degree was not for him after beginning it, and he relocated to Los Angeles to follow his ambition of being a musician. His professional career started in 1963 when he was selected from 250 applicants to be the lead vocalist for The Mitchell Trio, a vocal group from the 1960s.
Career
Although Denver’s career benefited greatly from being a member of The Mitchell Trio, he decided to pursue a solo career in 1969. “Rhymes & Reasons,” his debut solo album, was released. Denver was on a roll after his debut album, and over the following two years, he put out record after album of hit songs, greatly expanding his fan base. His role as the lead in the 1977 movie “Oh God” demonstrated that he was not only a talented musician. Despite not being a huge hit, this movie demonstrated Denver’s wide range of talents.
As his popularity grew, he realized he had a rare opportunity to speak up and take on an activist role for peace, a cause he was deeply passionate about. He got involved in the creation of “The Hunger Project” in 1977 and started working as a peace activist. Denver even traveled to the Soviet Union for talks and concerts related to the conclusion of the Cold War. Denver was a wonderful man, and even though he is no longer with us, his contributions to the world and his music live on!
