He was profoundly influenced by Henry Augustus Pearson Torrey, with whom he studied philosophy. Dewey returned to Vermont for a third year in order to teach elementary school in Charlotte. He enrolled at the University of Chicago, which had just been founded, in 1894. After relocating to the East Coast in 1904, he served until his retirement in 1930 as a professor of philosophy at Columbia University. Dewey persisted in the teaching profession subsequent to his retirement, until 1937.
In 1886, after meeting Harriet Alice Chipman for the first time in 1884, he wed her. Together, they had six children; she died in 1927. Then, on December 11, 1946, he wed Estella Roberta Lowitz Grant, a lifelong friend and widow whom he met while laboring in Oily City, Pennsylvania. They remained married until his death in 1952. John Dewey expired on June 1, 1952, at his residence in New York City, due to pneumonia.
