His formative years were spent in a Burlington public school, where he primarily gained knowledge from personal experiences as opposed to textbooks. He obtained his high school diploma and matriculated into the University of Vermont at the age of fifteen. He was profoundly influenced by Henry Augustus Pearson Torrey, with whom he studied philosophy. He subsequently taught science, Latin, and algebra at a secondary school in Oil City, Pennsylvania, for a period of two years at a monthly rate of $40.

Dewey returned to Vermont for a third year in order to teach elementary school in Charlotte. He obtained his doctorate from the Johns Hopkins University School of Arts & Sciences, where he was advised by George Sylvester Morris. “Psychology” and “Leibniz’s New Essays Concerning Human Understanding,” his first two books, were published at this period. He enrolled at the University of Chicago, which had just been founded, in 1894. Following that, he cordially invited Mead and Angell to collaborate with him in the formation of the Chicago Group of psychology. After relocating to the East Coast in 1904, he served until his retirement in 1930 as a professor of philosophy at Columbia University. Dewey persisted in the teaching profession subsequent to his retirement, until 1937.

In 1886, after meeting Harriet Alice Chipman for the first time in 1884, he wed her. Together, they had six children; she died in 1927. Then, on December 11, 1946, he wed Estella Roberta Lowitz Grant, a lifelong friend and widow whom he met while laboring in Oily City, Pennsylvania. They remained married until his death in 1952. John Dewey expired on June 1, 1952, at his residence in New York City, due to pneumonia.
