As a native of a small Alabama town, John Lewis received little formal education in his youth. He attended Rosenwald School, a community-supported school housed in a charming, compact structure. As he grew older, he and his family began to spend more time in the city, where he encountered racism and segregation.
Lewis became interested in activism after hearing about Martin Luther King Jr. on the radio in 1955; he attended the Montgomery bus boycott later that year. Lewis delivered his first public sermon at age 15. At 17, he met Rosa Parks, a notable participant in the Montgomery bus boycott, and at 18, he met Martin Luther King Jr. Lewis was ordained as a Baptist minister after graduating from the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee. He continued his education at Fisk University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in religion and philosophy.
As a student, John Lewis organised sit-ins at Nashville’s segregated lunch counters and played a significant role in the establishment of the Nashville Student Movement in 1961. Lewis has played numerous crucial roles in the civil rights movement and its efforts to end legalised racial segregation in the United States.
