His family migrated from Gilmer, Texas to San Francisco’s Richmond District when he was young. Mathis’s father purchased him a piano after observing his musical prowess at a young age. They soon realized upon bringing it home that it would not fit through the front door. Clem spent the night disassembling the piano for his anxious son. The father brought his son to vocal instructor Connie Cox, who offered to mentor him in exchange for housework. At George Washington High School, Mathis established his first band alongside his friend Merl Saunders, who would later become a well-respected musician in his own right.
