John William Carson Biography: John William Carson, the son of Ruth and Homer R. Carson, was born in Corning, Iowa, on October 23, 1925. After ordering a magician’s kit via mail when he was 12 years old, he began performing in public under the stage name “The Great Carsoni” after falling in love with magic feats. After graduating from high school, Carson became an ensign in the U.S. Navy, where he subsequently served as a communications officer tasked with deciphering encrypted transmissions. Aboard the USS Pennsylvania, he persisted in performing enchantment for his fellow sailors.

Carson expressed that one of his most cherished memories from his military service was convincing U.S. Navy Secretary James Forrestal of a conjuring trick. Despite being ordered to combat in the summer of 1945, Carson never had the opportunity to observe combat. World War II came to a conclusion with the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima in Japan in 1945. Fall 1945 marked Carson’s return to the United States, where he matriculated at the University of Nebraska. After four years, he successfully completed his undergraduate studies in radio and speech. He worked as a television writer for “The Red Skeleton Show” in Los Angeles following his matriculation before relocating to New York City in pursuit of larger audiences.

Carson was in and out of partnerships and was wed four times in his lifetime. He was wed to Jody Wolcott in 1948; the couple had three children. Following their 1963 separation, Carson wed Joanne Copeland within a few months. Following a lengthy legal battle that concluded in 1972, during which Copeland obtained an estimated $500,000 settlement and yearly alimony from Carson, their relationship came to an end. In the same year, Carson wed his third wife, Joanna Holland; the couple was divorced in 1983. After his final marriage in June 1987, Carson cohabitated with Alexis Maas until his demise more than two decades later.
