Early Life

Carmen Osorio and Andrés León welcomed Kevin de León into the world on December 10, 1966, in Los Angeles. Both of his parents were born in Guatemala, though it’s possible that his father had some Chinese ancestry. His mother, a single mother of two, relocated to Tijuana, Mexico, in the 1960s from Guatemala. Later on, De León’s mother relocated to Los Angeles. Before she met De León’s father, who was absent for the majority of his early years, she worked as a housekeeper.

His mother later moved to San Diego after meeting and marrying a man of Mexican descent. After they eventually got divorced, his mother raised their children in the Logan Heights neighborhood by herself. De León also lived in close proximity to his stepfather’s family in Tijuana for a portion of his early years.

After becoming the first member of his family to graduate from high school, he briefly enrolled at the University of California, Santa Barbara before leaving. Later on, in 2003, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Pitzer College. It was during his time at UC Santa Barbara that he adopted the alias Kevin de León.

Career

After being elected to the California State Senate in 2010, De León spearheaded efforts to restore the Los Angeles River, obtaining funding ranging from $68 to $176 million for the removal of hazardous materials surrounding the former Exide Technologies site.

Along with that, he managed to secure $26 million more to finish the Los Angeles State Historic Park and more than a dozen new parks. He created long-term supportive housing for homeless Californians and reduced the burden on city taxpayers by improving the energy efficiency of Los Angeles schools.

He was an English and citizenship teacher before he was elected to public office. In addition, he worked as a community organizer for the California Teachers Association and the National Education Association.

He pushed for raising student health insurance premiums, changing school fees, and renovating buildings in low-income communities in order to improve education there. He is well-known as an activist and supporter of education as a result.
