He is best known for his extensive vocal range, intense horror makeup, and performances that transcend the theatre. He began his musical career in the early 1970s with the heavy rock band Brainstorm. Then he joined Black Rose, a band with psychedelic rock and hard rock influences, before forming Mercyful Fate in 1981, with whom he has collaborated intermittently ever since.
Mercyful Fate was his first major collaboration with guitarist Hank Shermann, combining a complete and dark heavy metal sound with explicitly Satanic lyrics. After releasing two albums that left an indelible mark on extreme metal, he established King Diamond as a solo endeavour in 1985.
Before the 1980s, he was the primary singer for the hard rock/punk band Brats, and he has also been a member of the heavy metal band Danger Zone. In 2004, he also sang on ‘Sweet Dreams’ from the eponymous album by Dave Grohl’s Probot endeavour. After more than 30 years in the music industry, he has become a heavy metal icon and an inspiration for countless musicians and bands, including Cradle of Filth, Slayer, and many others.
