Her father, Jim Yamaguchi, was a dentist, and her mother, Carole Yamaguchi, was a medical secretary. Her two additional siblings were raised in Fremont, California. Since she was four years old, when she witnessed Dorothy Hamill earn the figure skating gold medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics, she aspired to become a figure skater. In order to maintain her training regimen, she began homeschooling. She attended Mission San Jose secondary School for her senior year of secondary school. She attended the University of Alberta to major in psychology. As a result of having club feet, Yamaguchi’s skating training began as physical therapy but rapidly evolved into a passion.

In 1986, she was 15 years old when she won the U.S. juvenile championship. In 1988, she won another junior-level championship with Rudy Galindo, her companion until 1990, when they both decided to pursue solo careers in figure skating. In 1991, she moved to Alberta to pursue a solitary career and coached briefly alongside Christy Ness. As a professional skater, she won multiple world championships and made headlines. In 1992, she won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics in France, culminating in extensive media coverage. Yamaguchi and the California Raisins collaborated in 1993 on a workout video titled “Hip to be Fit: The California Raisins and Kristi Yamaguchi.” Yamaguchi has also appeared in a number of television skating specials, including the 1995 Disney film “Aladdin on Ice,” in which she portrayed Princess Jasmine. She also appeared on television programmes like “Everybody Loves Raymond” (1996). Yamaguchi founded the Always Dream Foundation for Children in 1996. The mission of the foundation is to fund after-school programmes, computers, school supplies, and summer activities for disabled children.

Major League Figure Skating devised and produced the W.E. T.V. series “Skating’s Next Star” that Yamaguchi hosted in 2006. Yamaguchi served as a local figure skating commentator for San Jose television station K.N.T.V. during the 2006 Winter Olympics. On May 20, 2008, Yamaguchi defeated Jason Taylor and Edyta Liwiska to win the sixth season of the A.B.C. reality show “Dancing with the Stars.” She was Mark Ballas’s companion. Yamaguchi made a brief appearance and danced with Dorothy Hamill in the season 16 finale. Professional Skaters Association presented her with the Sonja Henie Award. In 2010, Yamaguchi served as a daily Olympic skating analyst for the N.B.C. Universal Sports Network. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, she served as a correspondent for “The Today Show.”

She is also a published author with three successful children’s novels to her credit. In 2011, she received the Gelett Burgess Children’s Book Award for the children’s book she co-wrote with illustrator Tim Bowers, “Dream Big, Little Pig!” A portion of the proceeds went to the Always Dream Foundation. In order to inspire women to appear and feel their best, Yamaguchi created a brand of women’s activewear focusing on utility, comfort, and style at the beginning of 2012. The name of the lifestyle brand is Tsu.ya by Kristi Yamaguchi.

She married professional hockey player Bret Hedican, whom she met at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Emma Yoshiko and Keara Kiyomi are their two daughters.
