Early Years

Kyler Murray was born in Bedford, Texas on August 7, 1997 as Kyler Cole Murray. Third-generation Korean American, he is the son of Misun Henderson and former Texas A&M quarterback Kevin Murray. Calvin Murray, his uncle, played baseball for the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, and Texas Rangers, while Devin Duvernay, his cousin, plays football for the Baltimore Ravens. Kyler attended Allen High School, where he was named Mr. Texas Football twice and Gatorade Football Player of the Year as a senior.

No other player has won Mr. Texas Football more than once. During Murray’s tenure at Allen High, the football team won 43 consecutive games and three state championships. Kyler’s high school record was 42–0, and ESPN, 247Sports, and Scout.com all rated him as a five-star recruit. Murray was the first athlete to be selected for both the Under Armour All-America Football Game and the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game. He played second base and shortstop for his school’s baseball team. In May 2014, he committed to play football and baseball at Texas A&M University, the alma mater of his father.

Career

Kyler decided to forego his senior year of college to enter the NFL Draught, and he was the first player selected. In May of 2019, he signed a four-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals, and he made his NFL debut against the Detroit Lions on September 8. Murray was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week following a Week 6 contest against the Atlanta Falcons, and his performance that season earned him the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and a Pro Bowl Alternate spot. Kyler was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week three times in October 2020 and once more in December.

He finished the season with 26 touchdown passes and nearly 4,000 passing yards. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was chosen for the Pro Bowl, but the game was cancelled. Murray was awarded “Madden NFL 21 Pro Bowl MVP” after winning a virtual exhibition game played through the “Madden 21” video game. In September of the 2021 season, Kyler was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week. In October, he suffered an ankle injury and missed three weeks of action. Murray was selected to the Pro Bowl following the conclusion of the 2021 season, and he signed a five-year contract extension with the Cardinals in July 2022.

During the interview, he also stated, “Obviously, in football you can study a player, but once you’re on the pitch, I think there’s just a natural feel for where you think people might be or where they’re going, as well as anticipating what will occur. It’s just like chess.” Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury announced in August 2022 that Murray had tested positive for COVID-19 and was experiencing “extremely poor health with cold symptoms.”
