Jackson was born on January 7, 1997, in Florida, where he also grew up. Lamar Jackson Sr. and Felicia Jones are his parents. In 2005, when he was eight years old, his father and grandmother passed away. Jackson is an African-American who began throwing footballs at age eight. Jackson attended various public schools and grew up in rough neighbourhoods. In high school, he began his football career as an impressive quarterback who could run and throw the football well. He devoted hours each week to watching films that would help him improve his accuracy and judgement. In 2014, he lost his final high school game to the Miami Central High School team.

Jackson entered the NFL Draft in 2018 and was selected by the Baltimore Ravens. In the same year, he reportedly signed a $9.47 million rookie contract with a signing bonus of $4.97 million. Jackson made his NFL debut in 2018 against the Cincinnati Bengals. In week 16 of the NFL season, he helped the Baltimore Ravens defeat the Los Angeles Chargers by completing 12 of 22 passes for 204 yards and a 22-10 touchdown victory.
