Early Years

Larry was born on July 2, 1947, in Brooklyn to Rose and Mortimer “Monty” David. His eldest brother’s name is Ken. His ancestry is Jewish. After graduating from Sheepshead Bay High School, Larry attended the University of Maryland. He was a member of the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity during his college years. He realised in college that he made people giggle simply by being himself.

The recipient of a bachelor’s degree in history. After graduating from college, David joined the United States Army Reserve and worked as a store clerk and limo driver while practising stand-up comedy at night. From 1980 to 1982, he was a cast member and writer for the ABC sketch programme “Fridays.” He then served as a writer for “Saturday Night Live” between 1984 and 1985. During his tenure at “SNL,” only one of his sketches aired, at 12:50 a.m., the last time slot of the programme. He worked with future “Seinfeld” actors Michael Richards and Julia Louis-Dreyfus on “Fridays” and “SNL.”

Career

Beginning in the early 1970s, he began taking acting classes in Manhattan. To pay his bills while working as a stand-up comedian, he performed a variety of tasks. He was a merchant for a brief period of time. Next, he worked as an attorney’s assistant. He worked as a taxi driver as well.

1974 marked his début as a stand-up comedian at Folk City in Greenwich Village. Between 1979 and 1982, he served as both a scriptwriter and an actor for ‘Fridays,’ the American Broadcasting Company’s (ABC) weekly late-night live comedy programme.
In 1983, he appeared in supporting roles in films such as “Second Thoughts” and “Can She Bake a Cherry Pie?” From 1984 to 1985, he served as a writer for NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live’.
After abandoning this programme, he resumed his stand-up comedy performances. In 1987, he wrote the narrative for a television film titled ‘Norman’s Corner’. He also wrote an episode of the American sitcom The Gary Shandling Show. In 1989, he collaborated with Jerry Seinfeld, a New York-based humorist, to create an episode of Seinfeld, an immensely popular American television series. 1987’s “Radio Days,” a comedy film directed by Woody Allen, featured his performance. He also acted in ‘New York Stories in 1989.

In 1998, he wrote and directed the comedy film ‘Sour Grapes’. Unfortunately, this movie did not perform well at the box office. In the same year, he became an executive producer for the final two seasons of ‘Seinfeld’.
HBO’s comedy series ‘Entourage’ also featured him as a guest star.

David wed Laurie Lennard on March 31st, 1993. Cazzie Laurel was born on May 10, 1994, and Romy March was born on March 2, 1996. On July 13, 2007, Laurie David filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences and seeking joint custody of their two daughters.

Through genealogical investigation, “Finding Your Roots” on PBS discovered in the summer of 2017 that David and Bernie Sanders are distantly related. The comedian described Sanders as “a third cousin or something.” Since 2015, David has made multiple guest appearances as Bernie Sanders on “Saturday Night Live.”
