Thompson began her professional golfing career on June 16, 2010. Because she was not yet a member of the LPGA Tour, she was initially required to rely on sponsor exemptions in order to compete.

When she missed the cut by four strokes at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, she received her first sponsor’s exemption. She participated in the US Women’s Open qualifying events that year, earning a place in the major field. S
