Wagner was born in Los Angeles, California, to professional photographer William Wagner and construction contractor Marilyn Wagner. Michael is her only older sibling. At the age of seven, Wagner’s parents divorced, and she relocated with her mother to Eagle Rock, California, a suburb outside of Pasadena.

In Los Angeles, Wagner launched her career as a model. She appeared in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Cosmopolitan, among others. In 1969, she competed on the dating game program The Dating Game. She also appeared in Playboy After Dark as a hostess.

Wagner struck an agreement with Universal Studios in 1971. She worked as a contract player for Universal productions, starring in programs like Room 222 and Bracken’s World. In 1973, she made her debut in the legal drama The Paper Chase as Susan Fields.

Wagner appeared as Jaime Sommers, a woman who is reconstructed with cybernetic implants after a near-fatal accident, on the science fiction series The Six Million Dollar Man in 1974. The character was so ubiquitous that she was given her own series from 1976 to 1978, The Bionic Woman. In 1977, Wagner garnered an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Jaime Sommers.

Following the conclusion of The Bionic Woman, Wagner continued to act in television and film. She starred in the 1988 and 1987 television films The Incredible Hulk Returns and The Return of the Bionic Woman. She had recurring roles on General Hospital and Melrose Place.
