On December 5, 1932, Little Richard was born. In Macon, Georgia, Richard Wayne Penniman was born. His mother belonged to the neighborhood New Hope Baptist Church, while his father worked as a mason and served as a church deacon. He also operated a nightclub. He was a typical student who practiced music for the majority of the day.

Little Richard: Career

When Sister Rosetta Tharpe asked Richard to start her show at the age of 14, that’s when his career officially began. He was motivated to pursue a career in performing by the opportunity. He joined Doctor Nubilo’s touring act in 1949 in an attempt to advance his career. Richard moved out of his family a few years later in quest of better opportunities. He joined the group that went on national tours without the bluesman, Buster Brown.

Although his family had already started calling him “Lil Richard” because of his unusual appearance, he was addressed as “Little Richard.” He got a contract with R.C.A. Victor thanks to his performance. “Every Hour” was his release with the label. He debuted “Tutti Frutti” in 1955; the song went on to sell over a million copies and garner multiple accolades in the United States and the United Kingdom. He soon followed it up in 1956 with “Long Tall Sally,” another hit song that went on to sell over a million copies.

At a 1957 evangelical gathering, Richard met Ernestine Harvin, the woman he would marry. They were wed after two years and had a happy marriage for several years until their divorce in 1964.
