Luther Ronzoni Vandross, Jr. was born at Bellevue Hospital on April 20, 1951, in the Kips Bay neighbourhood of Manhattan, New York City. Vandross was the second son among Mary Ida and Luther’s four offspring. His mother was a nurse, while his father was an upholsterer and singer.
