He launched his record label, REMember Music, in 2013 and signed a $10 million distribution deal with Warner Bros Records. His following albums saw success on the record label. He recorded four studio albums with Warner Bros., one of which, “Swimming,” earned him a posthumous Grammy Award nomination for “Best Rap Album.” Miller has produced albums for himself and other musicians under the pseudonym Larry Fisherman in addition to being a rapper.
On January 19, 1992, Malcolm James McCormick—better known by his stage name, Mac Miller—was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His mother was a photographer, and his father worked as an architect. Pittsburgh is where he grew up. He had a Bar Mitzvah as a Jew. Afterwards, Miller attended Taylor Allderdice High School and the Winchester Thurston School.
In high school, Miller expressed interest in athletics and music. He was usually involved in social events and sports. At 14, he decided to become a hip-hop musician and began rapping, even though as a youngster he wanted to be a vocalist.
In 2007, while still enrolled in school, he put out a mixtape titled “But My Mackin’ Ain’t Easy,” going under the moniker “Easy Mac.” In 2008, Miller—as a member of the rap duo The Ill Spoken—issued a second mixtape called “How High.” He has released two mixtapes, “The High Life” and “The Jukebox: Prelude to Class Clown.” Miller signed with Pittsburgh-based Rostrum Records in 2010 at the age of 17. Miller saw a major career breakthrough at the end of 2010 when his first tour sold out and was a huge hit. November 2011 saw the release of Miller’s debut album, “Blue Slide Park.” It sold 144,000 copies in its first week of release and made its debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 list.
His follow-up album, “Watching Movies with the Sound Off,” was published in 2013. That year, he also started his record label. He signed a $10 million recording and distribution contract with Warner Bros. Records following the expiration of his Rostrum Records contract in 2014. In 2015 and 2016, he put out two more albums, “GO:OD AM” and “The Divine Feminine.” In August 2018, Miller’s fifth and last album before passing away, “Swimming,” was welcomed with praise from critics. He was posthumously nominated for a Grammy Award in 2019 for “Best Rap Album” in recognition of the record.
Miller battled substance misuse. He disclosed that, in order to cope with stress, he typically combined several dangerous drugs. Drug misuse and addiction were recurring themes in his songs. He discussed it candidly as well. In 2016, Miller began dating pop diva Ariana Grande, with whom he had long been pals. In May 2018, the relationship came to an end peacefully. Miller passed away in September 2018 at his Los Angeles home after an unintentional drug overdose.
