Prior to joining NASA, Jemison served as a Peace Corps physician from 1983 to 1985. She wanted to become an astronaut, so she applied to NASA in 1985. NASA, however, delayed the selection of new candidates due to a shuttle accident; Jemison reapplied in 1987. In her career as an astronaut, Jemison flew only one space mission, STS-47 in 1992.
