Johnson was born to parents Earvin Sr. and Christine in Lansing, Michigan, where he developed a passion for basketball. In 1977, Johnson completed his high school tenure with two All-State honours and an All-American selection.

Johnson attended Michigan State University from 1977 to 1979 before entering the 1979 NBA draught. In 1987, he was the only rookie to win the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player award. Before the 1991-1992 NBA season, Johnson announced that he had tested positive for HIV and promptly retired from basketball. However, he returned to play for the U.S. national team in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Near the conclusion of the 1993-1994 NBA season, Johnson returned to the league as the Lakers’ coach.

Johnson was appointed president of basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017, but he resigned in 2018 to resume his role as an NBA ambassador in 2019. Johnson has had a very successful career and personal life, launching a record label and a late-night talk programme, among other ventures.
