He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest (then second-highest) civilian honour.
Maithili Sharan Gupt Biography: Maithili Sharan Gupt (3 August 1886 – 12 December 1964]) was among the most influential modern Hindi poets. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of Khari Boli (plain dialect) poetry and wrote in Khari Boli dialect at a time when the majority of Hindi poets preferred the use of Braj Bhasha dialect. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest (then second-highest) civilian honour. Mahatma Gandhi awarded him the title of Rashtra Kavi for his book Bharat-Bharati (1912), which was extensively cited during India’s freedom struggle.
He was born in Chirgaon, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh to the Kankane clan of the Gahoi Baniya community, a once-wealthy zamindar family that had lost their fortune by the time he was born. His parents were named Seth Ramcharan Gupta and Kashibai. His father and sibling, Shearamsharan Gupta, were both renowned poets. As a child, he detested school, so his father arranged for him to be educated at home. Gupt studied Sanskrit, English, and Bengali as a child. He was mentored by Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi. He tied the knot in 1895.
Gupt entered the realm of Hindi literature by publishing poems in numerous periodicals, including Saraswati. Indian Press published his first significant work, Rang mein Bhang, in 1910. With the publication of Bharat Bharati, his nationalist poems gained popularity among Indians fighting for independence. The majority of his compositions focus on Ramayana, Mahabharata, Buddhist tales, and the lives of renowned religious leaders. His celebrated work Saket focuses on Urmila, the wife of Lakshmana from the Ramayana, while another of his works focuses on Yashodhara, the wife of Gautama Buddha.
Following India’s independence in 1947, he was also made an honorary member of the Rajya Sabha, where he used poetry to express his views to the other members. He remained a Rajya Sabha member until his demise in 1964. He received the Padma Bhushan award in 1954
The death of Maithili Sharan Gupt occurred on December 12, 1964. He was 78 years old when he passed away.
