Bajpayee was born on April 23, 1969, in a small village named Belwa in West Champaran, Bihar, to a devout Hindu Brahmin family. He is the second of five siblings and was named after the Indian actor Manoj Kumar. Poonam Dubey, one of his junior sisters, is a film industry fashion designer. His father was a farmer, while his mother was a homemaker. As the offspring of a farmer, Bajpayee spent their vacations farming. Since early infancy, he desired to be an actor.
His father had trouble raising funds for their education. He attended a “hut school” until the fourth grade, and then attended Bettiah’s Khrist Raja High School. He graduated from the 12th grade at the Bettiah Maharani Janaki Kunwar College.
