Marie Antoinette Biography: Rapidly transitioning from monarch of France to adversary of the state, Marie Antoinette experienced a period of notoriety and historical veneration. Antoinette, born Archduchess Marie Antonia at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria, on November 2, 1755, was the younger daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa, the reigning monarch of the Habsburg Empire. Scorpio was her astrological sign, and she was of Austrian descent.

It is well-known that she enjoyed an idyllic upbringing and that her childhood companion was the renowned musician Mozart. She wed the Duchess Louis of France at the age of fourteen and assumed the title of Dauphine. When her father-in-law passed away four years later, the couple ascended to the thrones of France and Navarre as King and Queen, respectively. A number of scandals plagued the reign of Marie Antoinette, including spending and overindulgence, allegations of infidelity, and apathy toward her subjects. Particularly dismayed were the French people by the Queen’s incapacity to produce an heir.

The Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II, the brother of the Queen, intervened in the inexperienced royal couple’s conjugal bed affairs after eight years of infertility. It took eight months for them to have their first child, in 1778. Despite having given birth to the heir and Dauphin Louis Joseph in 1781, the French people continued to hold Antoinette in contempt. The employment of a lowly-born governess for the Royal children was met with disdain by the populace. Her alleged extramarital relationship with Count Axel von Fersen had no positive impact on her popularity. She faced allegations of impropriety, including lesbian affairs, jeweler deception (specifically, the Affair of the Diamond Necklace), and avarice (by desiring a private residence to bequeath to one of her children). Moreover, her immense power over the monarch solidified the perception of the queen as a vain and extravagant frivolousness that demanded her removal from the monarchy.
