Marvin Gaye Birthday

On April 2, 1939, Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr., whose surname was spelled Gaye, was born in Washington, D.C. Gaye was reared by his father, Reverend Marvin Gay Sr., the minister of a local church, against a bleak background of widespread violence in his community.

Early in life, Gaye frequently sought solace in music, acquiring the piano and drums at a young age. Up until high school, he had only performed at church revivals, but he soon discovered a passion for R&B that would pave the way for his career. Harvey Fuqua was soon won over by Gaye’s extraordinary vocal range, which encompassed three vocal genres. Gaye and Fuqua were both swiftly signed to Berry Gordy Jr.’s legendary Motown Records after catching his attention.

Gaye witnessed the triumph of the time as a drummer for Motown legends such as Stevie Wonder, The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas during his early years at the label. Later, with his 1962 solo hit single “Hitch Hike,” he became the first artist to enter the Top 40. Gaye continued to release solo dance singles and love duets with successful artists such as Diana Ross and Mary Wells after ‘Hitch Hike’. During that time, his most popular compositions included ‘Can I Get a Witness’ and ‘I Heard it Through the Grapevine.’ With the latter, he became Motown’s best-selling artist in the 1960s.

As violence and political unrest over the Vietnam War increased in 1970, Gaye was inspired to write the timeless song “What’s Going On.” Despite artistic differences with Motown, the song was released in 1971 and became an instant success. Gaye felt compelled to take even greater artistic and political risks as a result of the album’s success. When “What’s Going On” was published in the spring of 1971, it assisted Gaye in maintaining and expanding his Motown fan base.

Later, he left the stable, but continued to score victories. He released “Got to Give It Up,” his final album for Motown Records, and “Let’s Get It On,” one of the greatest love anthems of all time, which went on to become his second number-one Billboard hit. After leaving Motown in 1982, Gaye inked a recording contract with Columbia Records and began work on his final album, “Midnight Love.” The R.&.B. This album’s main single “Sexual Healing” earned the artist his first two Grammy Awards and an American Music Award for “Favorite Soul Single.”

Gaye was shot and killed by his father, Marvin Gay Sr., at their residence in Hancock Park, Los Angeles, on the eve of his 45th birthday, April 1, 1984. Later, Gay Sr. pleaded not guilty to voluntary homicide and was sentenced to a suspended six-year prison term and five years of probation. Gaye was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as well as inductions into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
