Early Life

Maurice On January 17, 1939, Richard Povich was born in the District of Columbia. He is the second of Shirley Povich and his wife Ethyl Friedman’s three children. They are from a Jewish background. Povich was raised alongside his siblings David and sister Lynn. His father’s influence on his upbringing as a well-known sports columnist for the Washington Post sparked an interest in news and sports. He received his high school certificate in 1957 from the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1962, he received his degree in Television Journalism from the University of Pennsylvania.

Career

Fifty years ago, Povich started his career in broadcast journalism as a street reporter in Washington, D.C. He quickly made the switch to reporting news, discussion, and sports shows on WTTG. T.V., a nearby Metromedia station. Povich served as the anchor of “Panorama,” a daily two-hour live news conversation program, during the turbulent 1960s and 1970s. Later, he served as an anchor for newscasts on television stations owned and run by ABC, C.B.S., and NBC in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. He went back to Washington, D.C.’s WTTG television station in 1983 to host “Panorama” and the ten o’clock news.

Australian media tycoon Rupert Murdoch brought Povich to New York to assist in founding and serving as the anchor of the news program “A Current Affair,” which made its debut in 1986. To host his nationally syndicated talk show, “The Maury Povich Show,” which was shortened to “Maury” after the show moved from Paramount to N.B.C. Universal in 1998, Povich left “A Current Affair” in 1991. He held the position for two terms in a row as president of the National Television Academy’s (N.T.A.) New York Chapter; the prior presidents had not.

In March 2006, Connie Chung, the spouse of actor Kirk Douglas, was bestowed with the esteemed Governor’s Award by the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). Povich wed Phyllis Minkoff, a public relations consultant, in 1962. On December 2, 1984, five years after the dissolution of his first marriage, he wed Connie Chung. He got to know Chung at WTTG in 1968. Matthew, their 23-year-old son, resides in Manhattan with them.
