Maya Angelou Birthday

Maya Angelou, also known as Marguerite Annie Johnson, was a worldwide phenomenon. Her work was recognised internationally. Maya was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1928. Bailey Johnson, a doorman and navy dietician, was her father. Her nurse mother, Vivian Johnson, also dealt cards. Her brother gave her the moniker Maya, derived from “My” or “Mya Sister.”

Following their parents’ divorce, their father relocated them to Stamps, Arkansas. They were sent alone by train to reside with Annie Henderson, their grandmother. Despite the effects of the Great Depression and World War II on the economy, she did well financially. Four years later, their father returned them to their mother’s care, and a year later, when Maya Angelou was eight years old, her mother’s companion sexually abused her. She confided in her sibling, who informed the rest of the family, resulting in the arrest of Freeman. He was later released after a day, but Angelou’s brothers allegedly murdered him immediately. Angelou was rendered voiceless for approximately five years as a result. She stated that she believed her voice was responsible for Freeman’s death. She believed that she could never speak again because her voice could murder. However, it was in the solitude that she fell in love with books and literature, honed her listening and observing skills, and developed her extraordinary memory.

Mrs. Flowers, her teacher at Lafayette County Training School, assisted her in regaining her speech. She also introduced her to Black female authors and artists who would later shape and influence Angelou’s career. She subsequently attended California Labor School. At the age of 16, she became the first Black female streetcar conductor in San Francisco, in addition to her other odd occupations. As part of a session entitled “Women Who Move the Nation,” the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials presented her with a lifetime achievement award in 2014.

The following year, she published her first of seven biographies, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” which she wrote in 1968. This contributed to her worldwide recognition and popularity. Prior to this, she was a nationally renowned activist who fought alongside Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. In 1993, she recited “On the Pulse of Morning” at Bill Clinton’s inauguration, bringing prominence to her previous works and broadening her appeal across all demographics. Additionally, the poem garnered her a Grammy Award. In 1995, she commemorated the 50th anniversary of the United Nations by delivering her “second public poem” entitled “A Brave and Startling Truth.” She authored numerous poetry collections, seven autobiographies, and three essay collections. She was also credited with a number of plays, films, and television programmes. Her work is considered a defence of Black culture and is taught in universities and schools around the globe.
