In 1974, Gibson enrolled at Sydney’s National Institute of Dramatic Art, where he began performing in plays like “Romeo and Juliet” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Three years later, Gibson debuted in the film industry. He was paid $400 for his performance as a surfer in “Summer City.” Gibson joined the State Theatre Company of South Australia in Adelaide after graduation. In the theatre, he has portrayed Estragon in “Waiting for Godot” and Biff Loman in “Death of a Salesman.”

Gibson rose to prominence after being cast as Max Rockatansky in the 1979 action thriller “Mad Max.” In the same year, Gibson portrayed a handyman in the film “Tim,” which garnered him the Australian Film Institute’s Best Actor award. Gibson earned the award for his portrayal in “Gallipoli,” a World War I drama (1981). In the same year, he catapulted to international prominence after portraying Max Rockatansky in “Mad Max 2.” “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985), the third instalment in the “Mad Max” franchise, was his first million-dollar film and established him as a leading actor. Gibson made his directing debut in 1993 with “The Man Without a Face.” Later, he directed and starred in the 1995 film “Braveheart,” in which he portrayed the Scottish national hero Sir William Wallace. The film received five Academy Awards, including Best Director for Mel Gibson. He was made an honorary Officer of the Order of Australia (A.O.) on July 25, 1997, for his contributions to the Australian film industry.

In 2004, Gibson wrote, directed, and produced “The Passion of the Christ,” one of his most popular films. The film was the highest-grossing R-rated film of that year, grossing nearly $370 million in the United States. Two years later, Gibson directed and produced “Apocalypto,” a film about the demise of the Mayan empire. In an adaptation of B.B.C.’s miniseries “Edge of Darkness,” he returned to acting (2010). Among his latter films were “Machete Kills” (2013), “The Expendables 3” (2014), “Blood Father” (2016), and “Dragged Across Concrete” (2018). Gibson’s comeback to filmmaking, “Hacksaw Ridge” (2016), earned him two Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. From 1980 through 2011, Gibson was married to Robyn Moore, and the couple had seven children. In 2017, he fathered another child with Gibson, Lars Gerard Gibson.
