Early Life
On December 14, 1950, in the East End of London, England, Michael Maurice Cashman was born. At the age of 14, Cashman started his acting career. In the fourteenth episode of the I.T.C.-produced television program “Gideon’s Way” from 1965, he made his acting debut. Cashman made an appearance in “Zigger Zagger” at the Strand Theatre in the West End two years later.
Career
Cashman began appearing in the B.B.C. television series “EastEnders” in 1986. When his character in a British soap opera became the first to kiss openly and gayly, he made history. The British press was divided over the scene.
Cashman entered politics full-time in the 1990s. On June 10, 1999, he was elected as a member of the European Parliament for the West Midlands, a post he kept until May 26, 2014. To combat homophobia in Europe and advance the rights of the LGBT community, he oversaw committees and coalitions that cut across party lines.
He received an honorary doctorate from Staffordshire University and was named M.E.P. for Justice and Fundamental Rights. Cashman was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list in 2013. In the following year, he was named one of 22 new life peers. He left the Labour Party on May 22, 2019, due to its stance on Brexit, but he later joined back on January 11, 2022.
