Mickey Charles Mantle Birthday

At center field, Mickey Charles Mantle is widely regarded as the greatest offensive menace in baseball. His Major League Baseball (MLB) career was spent with the New York Yankees, where he played center field and first base. Stage presence spanned from 1951 to 1968. He was born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma, on October 20, 1931, to Lovell Mantle and Elvin Charles Mantle. The occupation of his father was lead mining. Athletically, Mantle participated in football, baseball, and basketball while attending Commerce High School. A football halfback, he was awarded a scholarship by the Oklahoma Sooners. During his second year of football training, he sustained osteomyelitis in his left ankle after being kicked in the left leg. His athletic career could have been irreparably damaged had it not been for the prompt intervention that halted the progression of the disease. He was rushed to Oklahoma Children’s Hospital by his parents, where he was administered a penicillin injection to aid in his battle against the infection. 1949 marked his graduation from secondary school. His father passed away in 1952 due to Hodgkin’s disease.

Mantle began his professional baseball tenure with the Kansas semi-professional Baxter Springs Whiz Kids. In 1949, he was recruited by Tom Greenwade to the Class-D Independent Yankees. At Shulthis Stadium on June 30, 1949, he recorded his initial professional home run. Throughout his tenure with the Independence Yankees, he averaged a season high of.313. Mantle assumed the primary center fielder position for the 1952 season following the retirement announcement of Joe DiMaggio the year prior. Until 1965, he maintained a full-time position at that position before transitioning to left field. He established himself as the Yankees’ primary batter during his inaugural comprehensive World Series appearance in 1952, achieving a slugging percentage of over.600 and an on-base percentage of over.400. The remainder is history, as despite being afflicted with ailments, his performance progressively improved. Numerous accolades and accomplishments have befallen him in his time as a baseball player. The date of Mantle’s retirement from baseball was March 1, 1969. He bid farewell at Yankee Stadium on Mickey Mantle Day, June 8, 1969. Merlyn Johnson was his spouse in December 1951. Collaboratively, they bore four sons. Mantle passed away on August 13, 1995, after developing liver cancer as a result of years of excessive drinking.

Mickey Charles Mantle Biography:  FIVE INCREDIBLE FACTS

In addition to being babysat by a boy in the community, Mantle was also maltreated by his half-sister.

Famous sportscaster Pat Summerall, who had himself sought treatment for alcoholism, convinced Mantle to visit the Betty Ford Clinic in 1994, where he remained for a time.

On his way back to Dallas from Florida, he was once confronted by personnel at the airport due to his anxiety attacks.

For a period of forty-two years, he was an alcoholic, particularly during his playing years, and this led to memory loss.

In high school, his teacher seduced him, and he made light of the fact that he might have to sleep with his instructors in order to graduate.
