The family became destitute following the Texas oil spill and relocated to Lindale, Texas. At the age of 16, Miranda participated in the Johnnie High Country Music Revue, a talent show held in Arlington, Texas. Subsequently, she engaged in a recording session in Nashville; however, she withdrew from the session due to her dissatisfaction with the genre of music being presented. When she returned home in 2000, her father provided her with guitar instruction. Lambert began composing music in September 2001 and self-released her debut album that same year.

She began her career by performing at Love and War in Texas, a Tye Phelps-owned country music restaurant, as well as numerous other Texas venues, opening for artists like Jack Ingram, Cooder Graw, and Kevin Fowler.
