Mitchell Santner Career
Domestic Career
Mitchell Santner made his debut in the First Class for Northern Districts in 2011, and has since played for the same side in the New Zealand domestic system. In 2016-2017, the left-arm orthodox spinner played for Worcestershire.
Despite having played only 19 List A matches for Northern Districts, the selectors recognized his potential and expedited his promotion to the national team.
IPL Career
After excelling on the international stage, the courageous all-rounder was acquired by MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings for just INR 50 lacs in the 2019 auctions. The New Zealand bowler must be one of CSK’s most cost-effective acquisitions. The New Zealand all-rounder played in only four matches during the 2019 season and took four wickets. CSK will be looking to employ him on the dusty pitches of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi during the 2020 season, which is anticipated to be his breakout year.
Test Career
On November 27, 2015, Santner made his Test debut against Australia, which was the first-ever day-night Test match. In the first inning, Santner scored 31 runs off of 46 deliveries and also claimed Josh Hazlewood’s wicket by running him out. Santner demonstrated his prowess with the bat in the second inning as well, scoring 45 runs before being caught off the delivery of Nathan Lyon.
Santner achieved his first test century in November 2019 while competing against England at Bay Oval. His 261-run partnership with BJ Watling became the highest 7th wicket partnership in test cricket history for New Zealand. He also took three wickets in the second innings, becoming the first New Zealand spinner to take a wicket on home soil since March 2018, when seamers had taken 101 consecutive Test wickets in 11 innings.
ODI Career
Months after the 2015 World Cup, Mitchell Santner made his ODI debut against England at Edgbaston on June 9, 2015. Santner appeared to be the ideal replacement for Daniel Vettori in the eyes of the New Zealand rugby community. He participated in all five games of the series, taking seven wickets and scoring 97 runs. His first international dismissal was of Sam Billings for three runs. During the fourth ODI of the series, he scored 28 runs off Adil Rashid in one over, which is the second most runs scored in England ever off one over. In May of 2018, he was one of twenty players to receive a new contract from New Zealand Cricket for the 2018–19 season.
Santner was also chosen for the 2019 World Cup, where New Zealand finished in second place. He participated in 10 matches and scored 72 runs while taking six wickets.
T20I Career
Santner made his T20I debut against England at Old Trafford on June 23, 2015. Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow were the two batsmen he dismissed with the white ball. He scored 9 runs with the bat. Mitchell Santner was selected for the 2016 New Zealand Twenty20 squad as a premier spin bowler, alongside Nathan McCullum, who was playing his final international tour. Mitchell Santner’s T20I performances were so remarkable that he was selected alongside McCullum, who was playing his final international tour. Despite India’s formidable batting lineup, New Zealand was able to prevent India from chasing down 127 thanks to Santner’s extraordinary performance. Four wickets were taken by Santner, including those of Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, and Suresh Raina. This was arguably Santner’s finest performance in the tournament and in the years that followed, as his poor form and injuries led to his dismissal from the team.
Santner made his international return against Sri Lanka on January 11, 2019, in the only Twenty20 International between the two nations.
