Nichelle Nichols Biography:

Early Life

There was a girl named Nichelle Nichols, who was born on December 28, 1932, in Robbins, Illinois. She was also known as Grace Dell Nichols. Samuel Earl Nichols, her father, took care of the city of Robbins and worked in a factory. Her mother, Lishia Mae (Parks) Nichols, worked as a maid. Nichols’ family moved to Chicago when she was a child, and she learned to dance at the Chicago Ballet.

Career

She first appeared on screen in the 1959 movie “Porgy and Bess,” and her first TV show was “The Lieutenant” in 1964. Nichols went on to make two more albums, “Down to Earth” (1968) and “Out of This World” (1991). When she was cast as Lieutenant Commander Uhura on “Star Trek” in 1966, she was one of the first African American actresses to be given a part that didn’t fit a stereotype. Nichols played Uhura in many later “Star Trek” movies and TV shows, including “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” (1979), “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” (1982), “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock” (1984), “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” (1986), “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier,” “Paramount” (1989), and “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country” (1991).

Nichols got a grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which changed the company’s goal to include hiring astronauts. Because of this, a lot of women and people of color, like Sally Ride, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, and Ellison Onizuka, applied to work for NASA in space. As a follow-up to her book “Star Trek and Other Memories,” Nichols co-wrote “Saturn’s Child” (1995). She has also contributed to works by the National Space Institute.

October 1984, NASA gave her the Public Service Award for all the work she had done to bring the American space program together. In 1992, she got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In addition, she and the other Star Trek actresses were the first African American actresses to leave their mark in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, which made history.
