On December 7, 1928, Noam Chomsky was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1910s, his father—an Ashkenazi Jew from Ukraine—immigrated to the US. Along with his younger brother David, Chomsky grew up in an environment that fostered intellectual curiosity. His early years were spent in exposure to the ideologies of socialism, anarchism, and Stalinism, as well as the left-wing political views of several members of his extended family. In 1955, Chomsky began serving as an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He had to spend a lot of time on a machine translation project in addition to his teaching responsibilities. In less than two years, he was elevated to associate professor due to the positive reception of his work. Published in 1957, “Syntactic Structures,” was his first book. It was based on a series of lectures he gave to his students at M.I.T. The senior faculty at the university was so impressed by the novel ideas in his book that they asked Chomsky and his colleague Morris Halle to launch a new graduate program in linguistics. In 1961, he received a promotion to full professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics due to the program’s success.

His first political book, “American Power and the New Mandarins,” which outlined his reasons for opposing the Vietnam War, was published in 1969. He released numerous other political works over the ensuing years, such as “At War with Asia,” “The Backroom Boys,” “For Reasons of State,” and “Peace in the Middle East?”

Chomsky was repeatedly arrested for his activism, but nothing was able to quell his rebellious spirit. In order to discuss Indonesia’s occupation of East Timor, he visited Australia in 1995 at the invitation of the National Council for East Timorese Resistance and the East Timorese Relief Association. After receiving positive reviews, his lectures were turned into a book in 1996. In 1999, East Timor gained independence from Indonesia, and it was believed that his efforts played a major role in that victory.

Even after leaving M.I.T. in 2002, Chomsky carried out research and delivered seminars as an emeritus professor.
