Early Life

On January 31, 1947, in Refugio, Texas, Martha Lee Hancock Ryan and Lynn Nolan Ryan, Sr. welcomed their son into the world. At nine years old, he signed up for the Alvin Little League Baseball club. At the age of eleven, he was named to the all-star team. He received coaching from Jim Watson at Alvin High School.

Career

The New York Mets selected Ryan in the eighth round of the 1965 draft. Before long, he was pitching for the Rookie League of Appalachia. In 1968, he pitched for the New York Mets for his first complete season. Eventually, the following year, he led his team to a World Series victory over the Baltimore Orioles. In 1971, he was transferred as a starting pitcher to the California Angels. Afterward, with over 320 strikeouts and nine shutouts, he topped the American League. He also struck out 383 opponents, setting a new major league record.

Achievements

In 1979, he inked a $4.5 million one-year contract with the Houston Astros. With his 3,509th strikeout while playing for this team, he shattered Walter Johnson’s record. Then, as a free agent, he signed with the Texas Rangers. With 301 strikeouts, he led the league in that subsequent season. In 1993, after recording 5,714 strikeouts, he declared his retirement.

Personal Life

In 1968, he wed Ruth, his high school love. There are three kids in the couple’s family. He purchased the Round Rock Express and Corpus Christi Hooks franchises after retiring. In 1992, the U.S. Mint issued a $1 commemorative coin in his honor. The coin was given the moniker “Nolan Ryan dollar.” The Texas State Legislature renamed State Highway 288 the Nolan Ryan Expressway in his honor in 1995. In 2008, he was appointed president of the Texas Rangers. In October 2013, he announced his resignation as CEO.
