Patsy Cline Birthday

Patsy Cline has been described as one of the most prominent figures in the 20th century American music industry. Virginia Patterson Henley was born on September 8, 1932, in Virginia, United States, to blacksmith Samuel Lawrence Henley and housewife Hilda Virginia. From her father’s previous marriage, she had two half-siblings. After recovering from a vocal infection, Cline began singing and gave her first few performances in the local church choir.

In 1946, at the age of 14, she made her first public appearance after passing the auditions for a local radio station. In 1947, her father left the family, and Cline grew closer to her mother, with whom she shared a charming relationship. She began participating in talent contests and cabaret acts as she worked on her radio performances. However, she did not begin receiving critical acclaim until 1955, when she began appearing regularly on Connie B. Gay’s television programme. In the same year, she began recording for the Four Star label. Radio and television variety programmes expanded her audience. Her breakthrough tune was ‘Walkin’ After Midnight,’ which she released in 1957. In the late 1960s, she contracted with Decca Records and issued the single ‘I Fall to Pieces.’ Although the triumph was gradual, the song eventually topped the charts. This signalled her transition to singing more pop music. In 1961, she released ‘Crazy,’ which became one of her most popular songs.

Cline married twice; her first marriage was to a construction magnate, Gerard Cline, in 1953. In 1957, however, they divorced. In the same year, she married a linotype operator, Charlie Dick, and they had two children, Julie and Randy. Their marriage ended in 1970, but Dick remained involved in preserving Cline’s legacy following her untimely death in a plane accident in 1963.
