Klee was exposed to music at a young age, having been born on December 18, 1879, the son of a music teacher and singer. Being the younger of two, he gave the violin a try in elementary school. With his parents’ support, he quickly improved to the point where he was asked to play for sizable audiences at prestigious events.

Career

After completing her studies in the humanities, Klee went on to study art at the Academy of Fine Arts. He married pianist Lily Stumpf in 1906, after they first met in 1899. His travels gave him greater exposure to various colors, patterns, and landscapes, which helped him learn more and hone his pencil skills.

He studied a variety of artistic mediums and the works of his predecessors. He started hanging out with a few well-known artists who belonged to Der Blaue Reiter, an association of artists protesting the Neue Künstlervereinigung München. Wassily Kandinsky, a well-known Russian painter and Klee’s neighbor, was one of the group’s founding members. Later on, he became a part of the editorial team of the collective.

In the years that followed, critics and art enthusiasts praised his work, which also did well on the sales front. In the 1920s, he started working as a teacher at the Staatliches Bauhaus, a German art school, where he disseminated his knowledge through his pedagogical sketchbook.
