After relocating to Savannah, Georgia, in 1987 with her sons, Deen secured employment at a hospital. She started her catering business, The Bag Lady, in 1989. Her sons would bring lunch bags to the hospital, where she would prepare meals for her coworkers. Deen’s career as a professional chef began with this. In 1991, she launched her first eatery, The Lady, in a Savannah hotel, and it became a huge success. In 1996, she relocated to a larger location in Savannah’s downtown area and changed the name of the company to The Lady & Sons to emphasize the significant contribution that her two sons made to it. In the years that ensued, The Lady & Sons expanded their clientele significantly.

She compiled some of her best dishes into “The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook,” which was published in 1998. The book’s publication signaled Deen’s ascent to fame as a cook, selling nearly 70,000 copies in a single day and paving the way for the Food Network debut of her television program, “Paula’s Home Cooking,” in 2002.
