Paula Deen Biography:

Early Life

Wayne and Corrie Hiers welcomed Paula Ann Hiers Deen into the world on January 19, 1947, in Albany, Georgia. She was raised in the house of her maternal grandparents, and she learnt how to cook from her grandmother, Irene Paul. After graduating from Albany High School in 1965, she wed Jimmy Deen, her high school love. Deen’s mother lost away four years after her father, who was forty years old, in 1966. This time of accumulated adversity included these tragic events, the difficulty of parenting her two children, and being robbed at gunpoint while working as a bank teller. She experienced frequent episodes of agoraphobia and panic attacks as a result of this being so stressful for her.

Career

After relocating to Savannah, Georgia, in 1987 with her sons, Deen secured employment at a hospital. She started her catering business, The Bag Lady, in 1989. Her sons would bring lunch bags to the hospital, where she would prepare meals for her coworkers. Deen’s career as a professional chef began with this. In 1991, she launched her first eatery, The Lady, in a Savannah hotel, and it became a huge success. In 1996, she relocated to a larger location in Savannah’s downtown area and changed the name of the company to The Lady & Sons to emphasize the significant contribution that her two sons made to it. In the years that ensued, The Lady & Sons expanded their clientele significantly.

She compiled some of her best dishes into “The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook,” which was published in 1998. The book’s publication signaled Deen’s ascent to fame as a cook, selling nearly 70,000 copies in a single day and paving the way for the Food Network debut of her television program, “Paula’s Home Cooking,” in 2002. In addition to topping the network’s ratings, the program won Deen an Emmy for “Outstanding Lifestyle Host” in 2007. Owing to the program’s popularity, Deen went on to produce two other cooking series for the network: “Paula’s Party” (2006–2008) and “Paula’s Best Dishes” (2008–2013).

By 2012, she had published her autobiography, which became a “New York Times” bestseller, six cookbooks, and the inaugural issue of “Cooking with Paula Deen” magazine. She also created lines of cookware and culinary items and launched numerous restaurants in casinos around the nation.

Personal Life

She admitted using racial insults in a lawsuit, which led to The Food Network not renewing her contract in 2013. Retailers ceased carrying her branded goods in their establishments. Other businesses broke their connections with her as well.

She introduced The Paula Deen Network, a digital network based on subscribers, in 2014. She launched a mobile game and released another cookbook that reached the “New York Times” bestseller list in 2015, among her other endeavors. Deen also launched a radio program and a podcast. She debuted a clothing brand and two new television programs in 2016. Paula Deen’s Air Fryer Cookbook (2016) and Favorite Recipes of Her Lady and Her Friends (2017) are only two of the cookbooks she has published. She has also opened a number of other restaurants.

Following her 1965 marriage to her spouse, Deen gave birth to two kids, Jamie and Bobby. 1989 saw the couple’s divorce. She has been married to tugboat captain Michael Groover at the Port of Savannah, Georgia, since 2004.
