Philip Michael Rivers Biography: Philip Michael Rivers was born on December 8, 1981. He is considered one of the most famous American quarterbacks for football teams. He spent 17 seasons as a player in the National Football League (NFL), mostly with the Chargers. In the 2004 NFL Draft, the New York Giants selected him with the fourth overall pick after attending North Carolina State University.

During the draft, the Giants traded him to the San Diego Chargers. Rivers played his final season for the Indianapolis Colts after spending a total of 16 seasons with the Chargers.

Philip Michael Rivers: Early Life

On December 8, 1981, in Alabama, Steve Rivers—the head coach of the Decatur High football team—and his wife Joan, a teacher, welcomed Philip Michael Rivers into the world. Anna Rivers and Stephen are his two siblings. Rivers’ dream since childhood has been to play for the Minnesota Vikings. When he was asked to create a poster about his goals and dreams for a school project in the fifth grade, he made it apparent what he wanted to achieve.

Career

He officially began playing football in 1994 while he was a seventh grader. He has only worn the number 17 jersey since the ninth grade in remembrance of his father, who wore the same number when he was a high school student. After his father was appointed head coach of Athens High School, Rivers played football for the school.

Even though Alabama and Auburn extended offers to Rivers, he became the state’s top prep passer. In the end, he chose not to join any to get more playing time. North Carolina State eventually recruited him as a quarterback. During his collegiate career, Rivers broke almost all of the passing records held by N.C. State and the A.C.C.

He spent his first two seasons as a backup quarterback before starting for the Chargers from 2006 until 2019. He was selected for eight Pro Bowls during this time, and he also helped the team win four division titles and make six postseason trips.

Philip helped the team get to the A.F.C. Championship Game and win its first playoff game since 1994 in 2007. He is still regarded as one of the best quarterbacks to never have participated in a Super Bowl, despite his lackluster postseason play and lack of Super Bowl experience. He wed Tiffany, his high school sweetheart, in 2001.
