Pinarayi Vijayan Biography:  Pinarayi Vijayan is an Indian Communist politician who has served as Kerala’s Chief Minister since May 25, 2016. He is the longest-serving secretary of the Kerala State Committee of the CPI(M) (1998–2015) and a Politburo member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). From 1996 to 1998, he also served as the Minister of Electric Power and Cooperatives for the government of Kerala.

The Birth, Early Life, Family, and Education of Pinarayi Vijayan

Pinarayi Vijayan (age 75) was born to Koran and Kalyani on 24 May 1945 in Pinarayi, Malabar District, Madras Presidency, British India.

Before enrolling in the pre-university programme at Government Brennen College, Thalassery, Pinarayi Vijayan worked as a handloom weaver for one year. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the same university.

Pinarayi Vijayan wedded Kamala Vijayan. The couple is parents to two children.

Pinarayi Vijayan: His Political Profession

Pinarayi Vijayan became embroiled in politics while attending Government Brennen College, Thalassery, through student union activities. In 1964, he eventually joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He served as the Kannur district secretary of the Kerala Students Federation (KSF) [currently the Students Federation of India (SFI)] before ascending to the positions of state secretary and state president of KSF.

Later on, he joined the Kerala State Youth Federation (KSYF) [currently the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI)] and became the state committee’s president. At that time, communists in Kerala organised political activities from various hiding places. Pinarayi Vijayan engaged in such conduct and was sentenced to one and a half years in prison.

He subsequently became the president of the Kerala State Cooperative Bank. During the Emergency imposed by the former Indian prime minister, the police apprehended and tortured him.

When M.V. Raghavan quit the CPI (M) over the ‘alternative document’ controversy, he became the party’s Kannur district secretary. In less than three years, he joined the State Secretariat.

He ran for the Kuthuparamba Assembly Constituency and defeated Praja Socialist Party’s Thayath Raghavan by 743 votes. In 1996, he ran for the Payyanur Assembly Constituency and won by a margin of 28,078 votes over K. N. Kannoth of the Indian National Congress. From 1996 to 1998, he served as Minister for Electricity and Cooperatives in the E.K. Nayanar Ministry.

In 2016, he stood for the Dharmadom Assembly Constituency and won by 36,905 votes over Mambaram Divakaran (INC). He became Kerala’s Chief Minister for the first time. He was responsible for the Home Affairs and Vigilance Departments in addition to the other portfolios typically held by chief ministers.

In 2021, he ran from the same Assembly Constituency again and defeated C. Raghunath (INC) with 50,123 ballots. On May 20, 2021, he took his second oath as chief minister of Kerala.

Awards and recognition

In 2018, Pinarayi Vijayan received the Gandhidarshan award for finest chief minister.

In Baltimore, United States, the Institute of Human Virology honoured Pinarayi Vijayan for effective control of the 2018 Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala. Robert Gallo, a renowned biomedical scholar and co-founder of the institute, presented Kerala’s Chief Minister and Health Minister with awards.
