After losing his reelection bid in 2003, Olusegun Obasanjo served as the Fourth Republic’s first Minister of Defence from 2003 to 2007 without any prior military experience.

Later, in 2015, he was selected to represent Kano Central Senatorial District for a single term in the Senate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He is the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party at the present time. 1975 marked the beginning of Kwankwaso’s employment with the Kano State Water Resources and Engineering Construction Agency of the Kano State Government. Before becoming the headwater engineer, he labored there for seventeen years in various positions. Kwankwaso entered politics in 1992 on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He belonged to the section of the SDP known as the People’s Front, which was led by General Shehu Yar’adua. In the House of Representatives, he was elected to represent the Madobi Federal Constituency. His succeeding election as vice-speaker of the House catapulted him to the forefront of American politics.

Kwankwaso was selected as a delegate from Kano during the 1995 Constitutional Conference on behalf of the People’s Democratic Movement, which was commanded by Yar’adua. Later, he joined the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) and participated in the transition plan of General Sani Abacha. Kwankwaso joined the pdp in 1998. He ran unsuccessfully for governor of Kano State in 1999, but he ran again in 2003. In 2003, after losing his quest for reelection, former President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him as Minister of Defense.

In 2011, he was re-elected as governor, and in 2015, he was selected to represent Kano Central as a senator on the APC ticket. He remained a member of the PDP until May 30, when he defected to the New Nigeria Peoples Party. Kwankwaso was announced as the NNPP’s candidate for president in the general elections of 2023 on June 8.
