Ram Naik is an Indian politician who served as Uttar Pradesh’s governor from 2014 to 2019. He was born in the city of Atpadi in the Sangli district of Maharashtra on April 16, 1934.
Naik completed his education at Mumbai University, where he received a Bachelor of Commerce. During his college years, he was also active in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Ram Naik began his political career in 1962 when he was elected to the Bombay Municipal Corporation. Later, in 1978, he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, and in 1984, he was elected to the Lok Sabha to represent the Mumbai North constituency.
Ram Naik served as Minister of State for Railways, Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Parliamentary Affairs during his time as a Member of Parliament. He also served on several parliamentary committees, such as the Committee on Public Undertakings and the Committee on Estimates.
In addition to his political career, Ram Naik is also well-known for his charitable work. He has worked with various social organisations. Including the Indian Red Cross Society and the National Society for Clean Cities, to promote education, health, and environmental protection.
Ram Naik was a member of the Thirteenth Lok Sabha and the Oil and Natural Gas Minister in the Ministry of Atal Bihari Vajpayee from 1999 to 2004. He played a significant role in establishing the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. He was the BJP candidate for Mumbai North in the 14th Lok Sabha elections, but he succumbed to Govinda, the famous Bollywood actor and INC candidate from Virar.
Since childhood, he has been a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh volunteer, and he possesses a law degree. In 1964, he began his political career with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and helped organise a group of Mumbai transit commuters. Before becoming Minister of State for Railways in 1998. He was influential in the formation of the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation.
In 2004, he issued a statement in which he demanded an apology from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chairwoman Sonia Gandhi for the removal of inscriptions from statues honouring Indian revolutionaries such as Subhas Chandra Bose, Madan Lal Dhingra, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Bhagat Singh, and Bahadur Shah Zafar.
Ram Naik declared in September 2013 that he will not run for Lok Sabha in 2014.[8] He was appointed as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh on July 14, 2014.
Within a few months of his appointment as governor, he declared. “The Ram Temple should be constructed as soon as possible; this is what the people of this country want, and their desires should be met.”Hindutva groups promptly backed the argument.
