On December 28, 1937, in Surat, India, Ratan Naval Tata was born into Naval Tata and Sonoo. When his parents divorced when he was ten years old, his grandmother raised him. In 1962, he graduated with a B.S. in architecture from Cornell University. After that, he enrolled at Harvard Business School, where he finished his advanced management degree in 1975.
In 1962, Tata started his job at the Tata Steel firm, shovelling stones and maintaining furnaces alongside others in the blue-collar industry. Although it was laborious, the experience improved his understanding and regard for the family business. 1971, he was designated Director-in-Charge of the National Radio & Electronics Company Limited (N.E.L.C.O.) to address a financial predicament. Tata appointed him as the new Chairman of the Tata Group of Companies. Under his leadership, the business saw exponential growth and the financial performance of the industry improved. Tata significantly raised payouts while also altering the division’s strategic direction and leadership. He also became a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade and Industry.
He was a member of the advisory board of the R.A.N.D. Center for Asia Pacific Policy and actively engaged in the A.I.D.S. initiative program in India. He also serves on the international advisory boards of Booze Allen Hamilton, Mitsubishi Cooperation, JP Morgan Chase, and the American Worldwide Group.
Tata was 75 in 2012 and retired, but he’s still a wealthy businessman today, investing in intriguing new ventures. He has never been married, is a bachelor, and enjoys a tranquil life. He lives in a small Mumbai house and drives a Tata Sedan.
