Reece Topley Career

Reece Topley, a tall, spindly left-arm pacer who has spent more time off the field than on it, made headlines with his impeccable bowling at an extremely young age. Although he has represented England in Twenty20 and One-Day cricket, injuries have prevented him from continuing for extended periods.

At 6 feet 7 inches tall, Topley began his professional career with Essex, just like his father, Donald Topley. During his first three four-day contests, he amassed a total of fourteen wickets, five of which came against Middlesex and Kent. The teenager was subsequently selected to represent Australia in the 2012 Under-19 World Cup, where he finished as the leading wicket-taker with 19 at an average of approximately 9.

As a result of the development of his career, he was included in the England Lions squad for the 2013 tour of Australia. Furthermore, he was named to England’s Performance Programme after taking 80 wickets across all formats for Essex in 2013. However, due to his first injury during this period, he was unable to participate in the tour to Sri Lanka.

Topley was re-signed and subsequently included in the England One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 squad that faced Australia in 2015. He made his debut in Manchester and took 3 for 26 in his second match with Pakistan. Topley took ten wickets in five matches during his inaugural complete series in South Africa, but that was the extent of his involvement with England.

Essex were unable to afford the injury-prone bowler at this time, and he desired greater recognition than he was receiving with the county side. Following their separation, he enlisted with Hampshire, a team that had a history of success in the shorter formats of the sport.

However, he was ruled out for the entire 2016 campaign by a second incident at the start of the year: while playing against Warwickshire, a Boyd Rankin bouncer fractured a bone in his right hand. The following season, his Hampshire appearances were restricted due to a back stress fracture; he bowled a mere 112 overs across all three formats.

His fragile physique and future aspirations for playing were subjects of inquiry at the age of 24. On the contrary, Topley overcame these challenges and was selected for the Lions’ tri-series against Windies A and India A. Back in his native land, he amassed eight wickets during the series before his season was cut short by a recurrence of a back injury.

Following an agreement between the Hampshire club and the player to part ways, Reece Topley departed in October 2018. Throughout the 2018–19 season, Sussex placed a wager on him. Following his recovery and training permission at Hove, he made significant strides and amassed seventeen wickets during their Twenty20 campaign. Although Sussex desired to sign him to a new contract, Surrey outbid them in the race to acquire his services. Topleys’s county of residence was Surrey upon his signing at the conclusion of the previous season. In 2020, after more than four years, Topley was recalled to England’s ODI squad for a three-match ODI series against Ireland and made his ODI debut.

Topley demonstrated his prowess in both white ball formats on an international stage in 2022. At Lord’s, he amassed the highest ODI figures of any Englishman with 6/34 against India. An additional incident with an injury occurred shortly before the Twenty20 World Cup that year. A boundary sponge was trodden upon by him during a fielding exercise preceding England’s final warm-up match. He subsequently twisted his left ankle, which resulted in the rupture of his ligaments. He was ultimately excluded from the main event.

During the 2023 IPL auctions, the Royal Challengers Bangalore acquired Topley for INR 1.9 Crore. His debut was against the Mumbai Indians. However, he was ruled out for the remainder of the season after dislocating his left shoulder while fielding in that game.

Topley was included in England’s 2023 ODI World Cup squad. Last year’s Twenty20 World Cup was a wasted opportunity due to a last-minute injury, but he emerged unscathed from the ODI World Cup warm-up matches this time around.
